2008 Software Pricing and Licensing Results

The annual SoftSummit software licensing study, "Key Trends in Software Pricing and Licensing," was sponsored by Acresso Software, SoftSummit, Centralized Electronic Licensing User Group (CELUG), the Software Information Industry Association (SIIA) and the EDA Consortium. The survey reflects pricing and licensing trends and best practices in the software industry among executives at both independent software vendors (ISVs) and software buyers (enterprises). The study is based on results of a survey conducted in September to October 2008. The intent of this report is to provide valuable data and insight into how software vendors and enterprises view pricing and licensing issues, and summarize practices that are in use today and those that will be instituted in the coming years.

The fourth annual survey was carried out by Macrovision, SoftSummit, CELUG, EDA Consortium, and ECPweb. The report was released on November 12, 2007 at the annual SoftSummit Conference in Santa Clara, California. Key findings of the survey include that the satisfaction gap between Enterprises and ISVs remains an unsolved issue, the past three years have shown a consistent decline in ISVs offering flexible pricing and licensing strategies, and Enterprises are moving towards automated software for tracking compliance. Macrovision, SoftSummit, the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), and the Centralized Electronic Licensing User Group (CELUG) conducted a survey of pricing and licensing trends and best practices in the software industry among executives at both software vendors and software buyers. After strong industry interest and response to the study and its findings, the same parties have conducted a second annual survey and released the report on October 10, 2005 in conjunction with SoftSummit 2005. The intent of this report is to provide valuable data and insight into how software vendors and enterprises view pricing and licensing issues, and summarize practices that are in use today and those that will be instituted in the coming years.

In September 2004, Macrovision, SoftSummit, the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), and the Centralized Electronic Licensing User Group (CELUG), conducted a survey of pricing and licensing best practices in the software industry among executives at both software publishers and buyers. The goal of the survey was to gather the opinions of these executives to gauge major trends and prognosticate what the future holds in the fast-changing software industry. The report "Key Trends in Software Pricing and Licensing" was released in October at SoftSummit 2004.
